MOTOR VEHICLE REPORT

Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)

A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) is an encapsulation of a person's driving history. It is kept by each state's Department of Motor Vehicles and contains all the information that is pertinent to a driver. Although states may differ, a Motor Vehicle Report will contain minimally:

  • The license class of the driver (Class M: motorcycles, Class C: vehicles weighing less than 26,000 pounds, etc);

  • Any driving restrictions (Restriction A: must wear corrective eye lenses, Restriction X: must adhere to assigned driving instructions given, etc);

  • Any driver education programs that have been completed;

  • Any violations incurred (from minor citations like running a red light, to more serious offences like leaving the scene of an accident or Driving Under the Influence);

  • The date of issuance of the driver's license, and when it expires.

  • Whether points have been deducted from the driving record;

  • Other, more standard information (ie: not related to driving) like current address, date of birth, and social security number.

What is the purpose of the MVR?

MVRs are not so much the benefit of the driver, more-so for the benefit of companies and/or employers. Most companies, as a matter of course, will review an applicant or employee's MVR if, for example, they will be required to operate company vehicles.

By reviewing an MVR, employers can confirm that each applicant or employee's drivers license is in fact valid, and that they are legally licensed to operate a motor vehicle. For insurance purposes, it's in a company's best interest to always request an MVR check of any potential employee.
